The Department of African and African Diaspora Studies at UT Austin invites applicants for a tenured or tenure-track position at any rank to start Fall 2018 whose scholarship focuses on Yoruba Studies and draws on critical theories in the intersectionality of race, gender, class, and sexuality. We seek outstanding scholars with a background in Linguistics or African Languages who have experience teaching the Yoruba Language. We will consider candidates from a broad array of possible disciplines, including any of the Social Sciences, Humanities, Environmental Studies, Law, Public Health, Medicine, and/or Gender and African Studies, who can demonstrate expertise in African Studies and teaching proficiency in the Yoruba Language. Successful candidates must be committed to developing innovative undergraduate and graduate courses and programs across multiple research units and will be expected to teach foundational courses in gender and sexuality.
Teaching responsibilities include Introductory and/or Intermediate Yoruba Language, African Studies courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, and the supervision of graduate theses and dissertations. Additional responsibilities include curricular and service support for the African Studies Certificate, as well as assistance in departmental programming. The successful candidate will be expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses, develop a strong research program, demonstrate evidence of successful research productivity, direct graduate research and exhibit a commitment to service to the department and center, college, and university. Salary is competitive and dependent on qualifications and experience. Position funding is pending budgetary approval. Review of applicants will begin immediately. The selected candidate should have a Ph.D. in hand by the start of employment; be able to demonstrate a promising publishing, production, exhibition, and/or research trajectory; and have a solid record as an effective classroom teacher or a teaching philosophy helping to ensure success in the classroom. Preference is given to those applicants who have taught the Yoruba Language. Applicants from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups are especially encouraged to apply.
