Dear Institute for European Studies, Research cluster “Migration, diversity and justice”,
I am writing to inform you of our newly launched “My JMDI e-Toolbox on Migration and Local Development” free online course which has been developed by ITC-ILO, IOM and UNDP under the UN Joint Migration and Development Initiative. Given your areas of interest, we believe this could be of interest for yourself and your students in related courses on migration management, development and human rights.
This e-learning course is a free, flexible and comprehensive e-course for stakeholders working on migration and development at the local level on how to better manage migration for enhanced local development through the inclusion and empowerment of migrants and diaspora in development planning and policy-making.
The e-course covers a wide range of practical issues connected with Local Development through 6 modules. They are designed to be interactive, so they will include among other things scenarios, activities and video interviews. At the end of each module, it is possible to undertake an evaluation and receive a certificate if the course is completed. You can access the e-Toolbox here (available in English, soon in French and Spanish) and see more information in the attached flyer. This e-Toolbox is a complementary tool to the full digital training materials entitled “My JMDI Toolbox” developed by ITC-ILO and IOM under the JMDI. The Toolbox follows the same thematic modules as the e-learning and is available in English, French, Spanish and Arabic. This Toolbox has already been used by thousands of our stakeholders and partners around the world – see some of their thoughts on it below and access the Toolbox here.
What Do Our Toolbox Users Say?
“This very important tool has allowed us to combine our needs and optimize our resources while planning for local development by ensuring a sustainable and participatory approach in each of the processes that are being conducted by the Provincial Government of Imbabura for the benefit of the priority groups.”
– Tania Endara, Administrator of the Provincial Board of the Decentralized Autonomous Government of the Province of Imbabura, Ecuador
“This ‘hands-on’ tool-kit provides a useful road map with tangible actions useful to practitioners and all those guiding the inclusion of migration into local strategic planning. I am sure many local public authorities will benefit from it!”
– Dr. Gabriela Tejada, Migration and Development expert, Programme Leader EPFL Leading House – Swiss Bilateral Programmes, Cooperation and Development Center, UNESCO Chair in Technologies for Development, National Government – Switzerland
Why local authorities? It is local and regional authorities that are the first responders to migration and displacement, particularly given current global trends of increasing decentralization and urbanization. Yet many lack the resources, know-how, support and competencies to manage their migratory context and harness its development potential. Thus the JMDI has been providing technical and financial assistance to up-scale locally-led migration and development initiatives combined with capacity building. It is based on this experience that the lessons learnt and good practices from the JMDI-supported projects have fed into the e-Toolbox, Toolbox and more knowledge products which are all geared towards supporting actors working in migration and local development enhance their effectiveness.
We hope that our e-Toolbox is useful in the implementation of your courses or projects and we welcome any suggestions or comments and encourage you to share it with your students and other contacts and networks.
